Exterior painting for Tunbridge Wells homes
A-Z Decorators paints the outside of homes and businesses across Royal Tunbridge Wells, from stuccoed villas and rendered terraces to brick and weatherboarded houses and newer homes on the edge of town. Our team has more than 30 years in the trade, and every job starts with a free, no-obligation quotation that sets out the materials, labour and time frame in writing, including whether the job needs scaffolding.
Exterior paint is there to protect the house first. We wash down walls and woodwork, scrape back loose and flaking paint, fill cracks in render and joinery, treat mould and algae, and prime anything bare before the finishing coats go on. Fascias, soffits, sash windows, front doors, garden walls and railings each need their own paint and their own preparation.
Timing matters as much as the paint. Masonry and timber need dry weather and mild temperatures for the coating to cure, so most exterior work is booked for the warmer months, as our post on the best time of year to paint the outside of your house explains, and our post on what paint types last the longest compares the coatings we use.
Stucco, stone and render in Tunbridge Wells
The town's most famous houses are its Regency villas. Historic England's record of Calverley Park describes it as an early and influential park suburb of villas in parkland, designed by Decimus Burton from 1828, and many older houses and garden walls in the town are built of the local Tunbridge Wells stone.
Surfaces like these need the right coating rather than the nearest tin of masonry paint. Historic England's advice on redecorating historic homes is that lime render and stucco may need a breathable coating such as limewash that protects the surface without trapping moisture in the wall, and that painting brick, stone or concrete walls can create damp problems and is almost impossible to undo without damage. So we look at what each wall is made of before recommending any paint, and we will tell you if a stone wall is better left as it is.
Timber needs regular care. Historic England's same advice is that windows and doors need regular painting to protect the wood from weather, and original sash windows last for generations when they are kept painted. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, check with Tunbridge Wells Borough Council before changing its colours.
