Painting and decorating in West Malling and Kings Hill
A-Z Decorators paints and decorates homes and businesses in West Malling, Kings Hill, East Malling and the villages around them, close to our work in Aylesford and Maidstone. Our team has more than 30 years in the trade, and every job starts with a free, no-obligation quotation that sets out the materials, labour and time frame in writing.
West Malling and Kings Hill sit side by side but ask for quite different work. The older town has period houses and shopfronts along its High Street, while Kings Hill is a much newer development of modern homes and offices. We decorate both, inside and out.
Inside, that means walls, ceilings, staircases, doors and skirting, filled, sanded and primed before the finishing coats, as our interior decorating page explains. Outside, we paint render, brick, weatherboarding, fascias, windows and doors, which our exterior decorating page covers. We also hang wallpaper, set out on our wallpapering page, and paint fitted wardrobes, alcove units and kitchen cupboards, as our furniture painting page shows.
Decorating in West Malling's conservation area
West Malling's historic centre is a conservation area, one of those listed on Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council's page on conservation areas and listed buildings. The council asks anyone planning changes to a property there to use its pre-application advice service, notes that permitted development rights are more limited, and says most trees in a conservation area have some protection, with at least six weeks' notice needed before any work on them. That matters for exterior decorating too, when ladders or scaffolding have to go in beside a protected tree.
Period frontages need care with materials. Historic England's advice on redecorating historic homes is that painting brick or stone walls can create damp problems, that lime render may need a breathable coating such as limewash, and that original timber windows and doors need regular painting to keep the weather out of the wood.
The newer homes at Kings Hill have their own needs. Fresh plaster has to dry out before its first proper redecoration, and fine settlement cracks are filled at that point, as our post on whether decorators can fix cracks and wall imperfections explains. Our guide to choosing paint colours helps when you are moving away from a builder's neutral.
