Tenterden is a historic Wealden town, and its centre is protected. Ashford Borough Council's record of the Tenterden conservation area shows it was designated on 10 October 1996, and a separate conservation area covers Reading Street nearby. Painted weatherboarding is one of the most common finishes on older houses in this part of Kent, and it needs a different approach from brick or render.
