Most interior decorating happens while people are living in the house, so we keep each room usable for as long as possible and leave it clean at the end of every day. Fresh paint gives off solvents as it dries, and the British Coatings Federation's guide to VOCs in paint explains that these affect the air indoors during and shortly after painting and need ventilation, especially in enclosed spaces. Older homes need two checks before anything is sanded or scraped.
