Painting and decorating across Maidstone and its villages

A-Z Decorators paints and decorates homes and businesses across Maidstone and the villages around it, including Bearsted, Loose, Coxheath, Downswood, Allington and Barming, with our work reaching out to Aylesford and Lenham. Our team has more than 30 years in the trade, and every job starts with a free, no-obligation quotation that sets out the materials, labour and time frame in writing.

Inside, that means walls, ceilings, woodwork, staircases and doors, prepared properly first by filling, sanding and priming, then finished in hard-wearing trade paints. Our interior decorating page covers how we work room by room, and our guide to preparing walls for painting explains why the preparation matters more than the paint.

Outside, we paint render, cladding, brickwork, fascias, windows, doors and fences, with the surface cleaned, repaired and primed so the finish stands up to the weather. Our exterior decorating page has the detail, and our post on the best time of year to paint the outside of your house helps with planning it.

We also hang wallpaper, from lining paper to murals and feature walls, take off old paper and prepare the walls underneath, as our wallpapering page sets out. Bigger jobs, from interior refurbishment to tiling, coving and furniture painting, are listed on our services page, and you can see finished work from around the town in our gallery.

Decorating older homes and conservation areas in Maidstone

Maidstone has a lot of older housing, and a good deal of it sits in protected areas. Maidstone Borough Council lists 41 conservation areas across the borough, from Bearsted's village green to the Loose Valley and the streets around All Saints Church in the town centre. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, it is worth checking with the council before changing the outside of the house.

The town also has its own building stone. Kentish ragstone, a hard grey limestone, was quarried around Maidstone for centuries, and the Kent Archaeological Society notes that Hermitage Quarry near Maidstone is the only ragstone quarry still producing building stone. Many local walls, churches and older houses are built from it, usually laid in lime mortar.

Stone and lime need a different approach from modern brick and render. Historic England's advice on redecorating historic homes is that painting brick, stone or concrete walls can create damp problems, that modern paint can be almost impossible to remove without causing damage, and that lime render may need a breathable coating such as limewash. So on an older Maidstone house we look at what the walls are made of before recommending any paint, and we will tell you if a wall is better left unpainted.

Newer homes have their own needs. Fresh plaster in a new build has to dry out before it is painted, and fine cracks often appear in the first year as a house settles, which our post on whether decorators can fix cracks and wall imperfections covers.
