How To Paint Around Light Switches
To paint around light switches neatly, you have two options. You can mask the faceplate with low-tack tape and cut in carefully with a small angled brush, or you can isolate the power at the consumer unit, ease the faceplate forward a few millimetres, and paint behind its edge. Whichever you choose, never paint over the switch itself, keep the brush lightly loaded near the plate, and wipe any splashes off the plastic straight away before they dry.
The neatest result comes from the second method, but it carries a safety step that cannot be skipped. Before loosening any faceplate you must turn the power off at the consumer unit, because the terminals behind a switch or socket can still be live even when the switch is in the off position. If you are not confident doing that, masking around the plate is the safer route and still gives a tidy finish. Our team has been decorating across Kent for over 30 years, and the switches and sockets are usually the detail that separates a professional looking room from a nearly-there one, because a wobbly line or a paint-clogged plate sits at eye level and is impossible to miss.
Turn The Power Off First
This is the part to get right before anything else. A light switch interrupts the live feed to the light, but the conductors inside the faceplate can still carry current, and a socket is live at all times regardless of whether anything is plugged into it. Loosening a plate without isolating the supply is a genuine risk.
Turn off the relevant circuit, or the main switch, at the consumer unit, then check it is actually dead before you touch the plate. For a light, confirm the switch no longer turns the light on. For a socket, a simple plug-in socket tester will confirm it is off. Only once you are certain the power is off should you loosen the screws.
If any of that feels beyond what you are comfortable with, do not remove the plate. Mask around it instead, or have the work done by someone competent. There is no finish worth an electric shock.
Method One, Masking And Cutting In
Masking around the faceplate is the quicker approach and involves no electrical work at all.
Run a strip of low-tack painter’s tape around the edge of the plate, following its outline as closely as you can. Press the inner edge of the tape down firmly with a fingernail or the edge of a filling knife, because paint finds any gap where the tape has lifted and bleeds underneath it. Then cut in around the taped plate with a small angled brush, keeping the brush lightly loaded so paint does not flood the edge.
We’ve found the tape should come off while the paint is still slightly wet rather than after it has fully hardened. If you leave it until the paint is dry, the film can tear along the edge as the tape lifts, taking a ragged line with it. Peeling the tape back on itself at a shallow angle while the paint is still soft leaves the cleanest line. If the paint has already dried, run a sharp blade lightly along the tape edge first to break the film before you pull it.
Method Two, Easing The Faceplate Forward
With the power isolated, this is how the professionals get an invisible finish.
Loosen the two screws holding the faceplate and ease the plate forward just a few millimetres, enough to paint behind its edge but not so far that you are pulling on the wires. Do not disconnect anything. Paint the wall right up to and slightly behind where the plate sits, then let it dry to touch before screwing the plate back flat against the wall. Restore the power only once the plate is refitted and the screws are tight.
In our experience, easing the faceplate forward and painting behind its edge works better than masking around it because it leaves no ridge of paint against the plastic and no thin strip of old wall colour that shows if the plate is ever removed later, but it must only ever be done with the power off at the consumer unit. Masking is safer and faster. Loosening the plate is neater. That trade-off is the honest choice between the two.
A word of caution on tightly fitted plates. If a faceplate will not ease forward without tension on the wires, or the wiring looks old or crowded, stop and leave it flush, then mask instead. Forcing it is not worth it.
The Right Brush Makes The Line
The tool matters as much as the method. A small angled sash brush, somewhere around one inch to one and a half inches wide, gives far more control around a switch than a standard flat brush, because the angled tip lets you place a precise line right against the edge of the plate.
Load only the tip and remove the excess before you go near the switch. A heavily loaded brush floods the corner where the plate meets the wall and leaves a thick edge that catches the light. Two lighter passes give a cleaner, flatter line than one heavy one, and if you are building up coverage it is better to let the first pass dry and go again than to lay it on thick in a single coat.
Splashes, Sockets And Modern Plates
If you do get emulsion on a faceplate, wipe it off immediately with a damp cloth. Water-based paint comes away easily while it is wet and becomes far more stubborn once it has dried, at which point you are picking at it with a fingernail or a plastic scraper and risking a scratch on the plastic.

Sockets follow exactly the same principles as switches, with the single difference that a socket is always live, so isolating the power matters even more before any plate is loosened. Modern screwless and metal faceplates are a little different again. Many clip on over a base plate rather than screwing on through the front, and metal finishes scratch more easily than white plastic, so they need extra care and, in some cases, a specific approach to removal. If you are unsure how a particular plate comes away, it is better to mask it than to lever at it and mark it.
Making Good Around The Switch
It is worth preparing the wall around the fixture before you paint, not just the open areas. Cracks and filler often collect around switch and socket boxes where the plaster has been cut, and painting over them makes them more obvious rather than less. Filling and sanding those spots as part of your wall preparation means the area around the switch is as smooth as the rest of the wall before any colour goes on.
When To Leave It To A Professional
Painting around a switch or socket is well within reach for most people who are happy to take their time and, if they remove any plates, to isolate the power properly first. Some situations are better handed over, though, whether the wiring is old, the plates are awkward, or the room is one where you simply want a flawless finish with no risk of a marked faceplate or a wandering line at eye level.
